Utah’s seasonal roads start to open for the summer months

Updated as of Thursday, May 23

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Several highways and roads that typically close for the winter months are starting to open up as the weather gets warmer and calmer.

The roads, which typically connect Utah through high-altitude mountain passes, often close for the winter months. Heavy snowfall and icy conditions make the roads too dangerous for regular travel and maintenance.

As the weather begins to warm up, crews with the Utah Department of Transportation work to clear the roads of any remaining snow and prepare the mountain passes to open. The roads usually start to open in May or June, depending on the weather, and will remain open until the fall months.

Below is a list of each of Utah’s seasonal roads and their current status:

  • SR-39 Monte Cristo (east of Ogden) – Open

  • SR-65 East Canyon (northeast of Salt Lake City) – Open

  • SR-190 Guardsman Pass (Brighton to Park City) – Open

  • SR-224 Guardsman Pass (Park City to Midway) – Open

  • SR-92 American Fork Canyon/Alpine Loop – Closed

  • SR-150 Mirror Lake Highway (Kamas to Wyoming border) – Closed

  • SR-35 Wolf Creek Summit (Francis to Hanna) – Open

  • SR-153 Mount Holly (US-89 in Junction to Puffer Lake) – Closed

  • SR-148 Cedar Breaks National Monument (near Cedar City) – Open

UDOT cautioned drivers to be respectful on Guardsman Pass as it is a narrow road. Drivers should not park on the side of the road and should obey the speed limits and any other signage along the mountain pass. UDOT also advised there are no dogs allowed in Big Cottonwood Canyon as it is a watershed area.

More information on Utah’s roads and conditions can be found on UDOT’s traffic map online.
