USPS could move some mail operations from Springfield, Ill. to St. Louis

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The United States Postal Service will consider moving some mail operations from Springfield, Illinois, to St. Louis as part of a long-term plan for modernization.

USPS is currently conducting a mail processing facility review of processing operations at its Springfield Processing and Distribution Center. Leaders are considering a change that would modernize the facility as a local processing center.

Springfield community members reportedly expressed concerns during a meeting with USPS officials Tuesday evening, worried the change may postpone deliveries of local mail and packages. USPS officials tell Springfield TV station ABC 20 that should not be the case.

An evaluation of the Springfield venue is underway. USPS officials referred FOX 2 to a FAQ list for additional information on the matter.

According to that FAQ list, the Postal Service claims that “most of the mail collected in the Springfield area is ultimately destined for outside the immediate area.” USPS adds that “the business case supports transferring mail processing outgoing operations to the St. Louis.” Officials feel such changes could make the processes of sorting and delivering mail more efficient.

If the proposed service change becomes a reality, mail originating in the Springfield area, but still destined within it, would travel first to St. Louis to be processed before returning to a Springfield local processing center. USPS says this change would still meet a two-day service standard for mail recipients in central Illinois.

In addition to Tuesday’s meeting, USPS is also collecting public comments on the proposed service. USPS has not yet authorized any changes to its current mail services in Springfield or St. Louis in connection with the proposal.
