Used cars damaged by deputy pursuit, crash in Wyoming

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police continue to investigate a chase involving the Kent County Sheriff’s Office that ended with one person seriously injured, another arrested, and several cars damaged.

Tuesday, clean-up continued for Steve Karrip, the owner of Metro Motors in Wyoming, just one day after he received a phone call he wasn’t expecting.

“One of my neighbors here called me and said you better get over here, somebody crashed into your cars,” Karrip said.

Deputies: Car chase suspect hit by sheriff’s cruiser

Monday evening, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy found a stolen vehicle believed to be connected to several other crimes in the county. When a traffic stop was attempted, the Sheriff’s Office said the driver would not pull over, which led to a short chase.

It ended after the suspect vehicle went off the road and crashed into unoccupied cars at Metro Motors on Division Avenue near 32nd Street.

“My cars are off the car lot for two weeks or a month while they’re getting fixed. They were not damaged that bad, but it’s probably $5,000 or $6,000 per car,” Karrip said.

News 8 obtained surveillance video showing some of the final moments of the pursuit.

In the video, you can see a person get out of a moving vehicle and begin running as law enforcement follows behind.

Two people inside the vehicle fled, the sheriff’s office said. One of them had serious injuries and was taken to the hospital after being hit by a sheriff’s office vehicle and the other was taken into custody.

“I’m just glad that they did apprehend the two guys,” Karrip said. “It was something important that they were chasing him for because they had a lot of police power here doing that.”

Deputies did not say exactly what crimes the vehicle was connected to or who the suspects were.

As Karrip is now left to deal with insurance for his damaged cars, he said the incident does not reflect where he’s done business for years.

“There’s a lot of good residential stuff around here, people that have lived here for a really long time and care about the neighborhood,” Karrip said.

He also said the area where the person was hit by the sheriff’s office vehicle was next to his business. He couldn’t see the extent of their injuries but said they were treated by several first responders.
