USC Aiken’s Rory McDonald O’Brien wins medalist, Pacers second at Palmetto Intercollegiate

AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken sophomore Rory McDonald O’Brien bested the entire field Tuesday, claiming the individual title at the 27th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.

His performance guided the No. 6 University of South Carolina Aiken golf team to a second-place finish behind Davidson.

McDonald O’Brien finished three-under par, 207, for the 4-hole event. After shooting 69-68 on the first two rounds, he notched an even-par, 70, for the final 18 holes of competition to win the title. It marked the first individual win of his career.

Head coach Michael Carlisle nearly had another student-athlete in the top 10, but Erik Olin claimed 11th place at four-over par, 214. He shot 70-71-73 for the three-round tally.

Jonah Winter took 15th with a five-over par, 215. He shot scores of 78-67-70.

Oscar Abrahamsson and Nick Goellner tied for 26th. They each shot nine-over par, 219.

Davidson won the event after shooting five-over par, 845. The Wildcats were the lone team to be below par on the final day of competition (-1, 279).

USC Aiken shot 11-over par, 851, for second place. Furman was third after posting a score of 19-over par, 859, in the 15-team field.

The Pacers return to action March 18-19 at the Bobcat Invitational.
