South Carolina adds transfer tailback commitment from MEAC’s leading rusher

South Carolina has added yet another running back through the transfer portal.

Days after bringing aboard North Texas transfer Oscar Adaway and Arkansas transfer Rocket Sanders, the Gamecocks have brought in someone familiar with playing college football in the Palmetto State.

On Thursday, S.C. State transfer tailback Jawarn Howell announced his commitment to the Gamecocks.

As a freshman this past season for the Bulldogs, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Howell ran for over 800 yards on just 102 carries (7.9 ypc) while finding the end zone nine times.

Howell, a native of Mooresville, North Carolina who ran for over 1,800 yards and 22 touchdowns as a high school senior, won the MEAC Freshman of the Year and led the conference in rushing.

In one of his final games of this season against Howard, Howell carried the ball 27 times for 287 yards and scored three times.

Howell put his name in the transfer portal just a few weeks after longtime S.C. State head coach Buddy Pough coached his final game. The Bulldogs recently hired Benedict head coach Chennis Berry.

How much playing time Howell will see in a backfield that now includes Sanders, Adaway and youngster Djay Braswell is still to be seen.

But the S.C. State transfer certainly has loads of upside and could follow in the footsteps of Mario Anderson, who shined at a lower level before excelling in Columbia.
