US seriously considering declaring Russia state sponsor of terrorism, says Ambassador Brink

According to her, such a step requires "careful analysis in accordance with American laws."

"We use all available means, including many that would apply to a country that is such a sponsor,” the diplomat said.

“However, we also take such a designation seriously. And we will continue to hold Russia accountable in accordance with our law.”

Brink stressed that the United States, together with their allies, have introduced "an unprecedented volume and depth of sanctions" and will continue to do so.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called on the world community to recognize Russia as a sponsor of terrorism amid countless war crimes committed by Moscow, including the killing of civilians and missile attacks on the civilian infrastructure of Ukrainian cities. On May 3, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, addressed the House of Representatives and the Senate of the U.S. Congress with such an appeal.

Politico reported on July 20 that Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, asked U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, otherwise Congress would do it.

As of the summer of 2022, the American list of state sponsors of terrorismincludes four countries — Iran, Cuba, North Korea, and Syria.
