US rapper and songwriter XXXTentacion has died at the age of 20, according to reports.

Media outlet TMZ first broke the news that the controversial hip-hop star – real-name Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy – was shot in Florida earlier today (June 18) and later died from his injuries.

The local police department in Broward County confirmed the incident on Twitter, revealing that dispatchers had received a call regarding a shooting just before 4pm.

"An adult male victim was transported to an area hospital," it confirmed before announcing that the victim had been pronounced dead in hospital a short while later.

They also confirmed that the victim had been identified as XXXTentacion.

Although a divisive figure, XXXTentacion had commercial success with his second album ?, which was released earlier this year.

The follow-up to his debut 17 reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the US, which gained popularity for its singles 'Sad!' and 'Changes'. During his career, the rapper also collaborated with Miley Cyrus' sister Noah on her track 'Again'.

Earlier this month, streaming giant Spotify apologised after it removed XXXTentacion's music from its service as part of its "Hate Content & Hateful Conduct" policy.

CEO Daniel Ek recently conceded the pitfalls of the policy, affirming that they had "rolled [it] out wrong" and could have done a much better job.

"The whole goal with this was to make sure that we didn't have hate speech. It was never about punishing one individual artist or even naming one individual artist," he said.
