US prepares $1 billion military aid package for Ukraine — report

As the $61 billion Ukraine aid bill is expected to clear the U.S. Congress, Washington is preparing a $1 billion security assistance package for Kyiv, Reuters reported on April 23, citing U.S. officials.

According to the report, it will include:

  • Transport vehicles;

  • Stinger MANPADS missiles;

  • Additional ammunition for HIMARS rocket artillery;

  • 155mm artillery rounds;

  • TOW and Javelin anti-tank missiles.

The package will also contain other weapons that can be immediately deployed on the battlefield, the sources added.

Earlier, CNN reported that much of the U.S. equipment earmarked for Ukraine is already in storage across Germany and Poland. An unnamed official added that artillery rounds would be among the first supplies delivered to Ukraine.

On April 20, after months of stalling, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would provide $60.8 billion in U.S. support for Ukraine.

The Senate is expected to consider the bill on April 23, which will likely pass without delay, before it is sent to President Joe Biden for his signature.

On April 21, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner said the United States could send a new aid package to Ukraine by the end of the week.
