A U.S. congressman has introduced new articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, claiming that several of his actions during his time in office are ‘violations of the U.S. Constitution’.

His resolution was signed by five other Democrats.

Appearing at a press conference on Wednesday morning, Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen said: ‘The time has come to make clear to the American people and to this president that his train of injuries to our Constitution must be brought to an end through impeachment.’

Among the violations cited by Cohen are Trump’s firing of former FBI director James Comey, which he claims to be evidence of obstructing justice.

Cohen also claims that Trump violated the constitution by taking money from foreign powers and undermined the federal judiciary by pardoning former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was found guilty of contempt of court earlier this year.

Cohen was supported by Luis Gutierrez, the Representative for Illinois.

Gutierrez said: ‘There’s many reasons I think the president is an awful president and an awful person but not all of those rise to the level of impeachment charges.

President Trump is yet to directly respond to the attempt.

He also said that filing for impeachment was imperative to prevent a fear of ‘failing to do our jobs.’

‘I see a crime and I have a responsibility to dial 9-1-1 immediately,’ said Gutierrez.

‘I don’t reach consensus with all my neighbors and friends, I call the police and I activate an investigation.’

In response, a Republican National Committee spokesman said the motion would be disputed by the ‘vast majority’ of Americans.

‘House Democrats lack a positive message and are completely unwilling to work across the aisle, so instead they’ve decided to support a baseless radical effort that the vast majority of Americans disagree with’, he said.
