US poised to deliver aid to Ukraine quickly after congressional approval — report

The Pentagon is ready to quickly dispatch artillery and anti-aircraft munitions to Ukraine as soon as the House foreign aid bill clears Congress, Politico reported on April 19, citing U.S. officials.

The report said that the U.S. Department of Defense expects the $60 Ukraine aid package to be approved by the House of Representatives in the coming days. At the same time, the White House has not yet decided how large the first aid tranche will be or what type of weapons it will include.

According to unnamed U.S. officials, the Ukrainian aid package will promptly go through "the bureaucratic process once the legislation passes and is signed by the president [Joe Biden]."

“They [DoD] will have that recommendation to the secretary very quickly, and that gets to the president shortly thereafter,” the source said.

The official also mentioned that a large stockpile of U.S. weapons is in warehouses across Europe and can be readily sent to Ukraine from there.

Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder told reporters that the United States has a "very robust logistics network that enables us to move materiel very quickly."

“We certainly understand and appreciate the urgency and are poised to move quickly,” Ryder added.

Politico also reported that Celeste Wallander, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, stated that the United States would begin the rapid movement of ammunition, artillery rounds, and air defense system equipment as soon as Congress passes the bill.

On April 17, House Speaker Mike Johnson submitted his preferred version of Ukraine aid bill to the House of Representatives. In provides for $60 billion in security assistance, including the transfer of ATACMS ballistic missiles to Kyiv. The House is expected to vote on the bill on April 20, which would likely pass with significant bipartisan support.
