US Capitol Police: Man tried to get into Capitol with hammer in bag

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — United States Capitol Police (USCP) arrested a man with a hammer in his back who they say was trying to get into the Capitol.

In a news release, USCP said that a man was going through the screening at the Capitol Visitor Center around 3:40 p.m. A USCP officer saw a hammer in the x-ray of the man’s backpack. When the officer tried to take the bag for a second screening to look inside, the man tried to “grab the bag and became combative.”

Officers stepped in to stop him, and USCP said that a struggle followed. Officers had to use a Taser to stop the man and take him into custody.

Police later recovered the hammer from the man’s bag.

USCP identified the suspect as 33-year-old Christopher Snow of Canton, Ohio. Officers were still working to determine why he brought the hammer to the Capitol.

Police charged Snow with assault on a police officer.
