Urbana Free Library hosts 4th Annual Adult Spelling Bee

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Word competitions are usually reserved for children, so it’s not often you see adults battle for the title of the best speller. The Urbana Free Library held its Annual Adult Spelling Bee on Saturday.

The event featured 20 people from the ages 16 and up, competing to be crowned as the champion. In the end, it was Roxanne Munch who won the competition by spelling the word “tantivy” correctly. The spelling bee saw a total of 53 people watch and cheer on the contestants.

Pronouncer Mary McKeeth officiated the competition.  She said the environment was really special.

“I think it’s really fun because these are adults, and a lot of times, adults aren’t necessarily ready to stand up in front of a group of people and spell words. You haven’t probably done that since you were in sixth grade,” McKeeth said. “So they’ve been doing this for probably the fourth or fifth one, I’m not sure. And every year the crowd gets bigger. So this is really great.”

The library said the event was once again a massive success and will return next winter.
