Upstream jobs boom

Oct. 24—Since the low point in exploration and production, or "upstream," employment like that in the Permian Basin in September of 2020, the oil and gas industry has averaged adding 1,913 jobs per month, including 900 in September, the Texas Workforce Commission reports.

That's total growth of 45,900 to the current workforce level of 202,900, the state says.

"September 2022 jobs were up by 34,900, or 20.8 percent, from September 2021," said Texas Oil & Gas Association President Todd Staples Monday from Austin. "We continue to see steady growth in upstream oil and natural gas employment, which is good news because these jobs pay among the highest wages in Texas and directly contribute to our country's national and energy security.

"What we need are policies that enable critically needed infrastructure projects to move forward to continue job growth and maintain energy security for our country," Staples said.
