Upcoming deadline for 8th annual Kids Kick Opioids Contest

CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey wants to remind parents, students, and schools that the deadline for the 8th Annual Kids Kick Opioids contest is coming near.

The deadline for the contest is Friday, May 3, 2024. The contest is informative for students to learn about the deadly consequences of painkiller abuse. It also lets students express their personal experiences on how opioid use has affected their lives and loves ones.

“Every year, the Kids Kick Opioids contest showcases the incredible talent and creativity of our elementary and middle school students. Their entries viscerally demonstrate that the opioid crisis affects many families across West Virginia, and as a result, resonates in classrooms statewide,” Attorney General Morrisey said.

More than 17,600 entries have been entered since the contest was created.

“Kids Kick Opioids gives students an outlet to express their concerns, while using the creativity and talent of all participants to raise awareness of the epidemic,” Attorney General Morrisey said.

For this contest, students can work by themselves or in groups. These submission can be of drawings, poems, letters, or any type of work that promotes opioid use awareness. The winning entry will be displayed as a statewide newspaper public service announcement and regional winners will have their work showcased in the State Capitol.

Unfortunately, thousands of residents of the Mountain State have succumbed to drug overdose. much of which was associated with opiate use.

A top priority for the Attorney General has been trying to reduce the number of opioid related overdoses and deaths and has fought this epidemic on multiple fronts, even nationally. He has even brought some of these cases into legal litigation, and has even tried to educate the public and community about this tragic epidemic.

Friday, May 3, 2024 is when contest entries must be postmarked by, and they must be mailed to the Attorney General’s Office at 1900 Kanawha Blvd. E., State Capitol Building 1, Room 26-E, Charleston, WV 25305, or sent by email to AGPSA.contest@wvago.gov.
