Unused prescriptions? National Take Back Day provides a safe way to dispose of them

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — If you have some old prescriptions you won’t want to miss out on this weekend’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

On Saturday, April 27, various police agencies will be setting up convenient locations for Utahns to drop off their old, unused and unneeded prescription drugs. From Logan to Lehi, police agencies will welcome prescription drug-drop offs at their departments, grocery stores, pharmacies and city halls.

To find a drop-off location near you, visit the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) website and search for your city.

National Drug Take Back Day is a biannual federal initiative that aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible way to get rid of prescription drugs. The takeback has helped prevent prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands and furthering opioid abuse and addiction.

In 2023, Utahns dropped off nearly 20,000 pounds of prescription drugs, according to the DEA. Since the initiative started in 2010, Utahs have safely returned nearly 250,000 pounds of prescription medication.

If you’re unable to make it to this Saturday’s event, don’t worry. There are authorized drop-off locations throughout Utah such as certain pharmacies and medical centers where you can drop off your unneeded prescriptions year-round. To find a location near you, click here.
