UNLV beats Hawaii to win fabled pineapple trophy
The historic Island Showdown Trophy is UNLV’s.
What? You’ve never heard of the Island Showdown Trophy? That’s OK. It was unveiled earlier this week. But you’re going to remember it forever and ever and ever. It’s a pineapple on a pedestal.
A very large pineapple on a pedestal. And it goes to the winner of the annual UNLV-Hawaii game. The Rebels beat the Warriors 31-23 in Las Vegas on Saturday.

It’s so beautiful.
We also feel obligated to point out that the Island Showdown Trophy — sponsored by a hotel chain named for another state entirely — is awarded to the winner of a game contested between an island school and a school located in the middle of a desert but there’s no need to get into semantics at this moment. It’s a pineapple on a pedestal.

UNLV is 4-5 after the win and suddenly within two wins of heading to a bowl. That’s a big achievement for a program that lost to Howard in Week 1 — a game that was the biggest upset in college football history by point spread. With games against BYU, New Mexico and Nevada to wrap up the season, UNLV could even get to seven wins. That’s impressive.
But not as impressive as getting to keep a golden pineapple on a pedestal for a season.
