University of Illinois in top 10 colleges for Peace Corps recruits

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The University of Illinois has been recognized as a top producer of volunteers with the Peace Corps.

The Peace Corps listed the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as the #7 college for recruiting volunteers for large colleges with more than 15,000 undergraduates last month. Since the start of the organization in 1961, the university has placed 1,674 volunteers.

“I am so grateful to these outstanding institutions for challenging and inspiring their students to not only be exceptional students but also to go on to be informed and intentional global citizens,” said Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn in a news release.

University administration said they value the relationship they have with the Peace Corps.

“We’re extremely proud to be recognized by the Peace Corps,” said UIUC Chancellor Robert Jones. “We often talk about preparing our students to lead lives and careers of impact after they leave Illinois. It is hard to think of a more direct example of what that looks like than service in the Peace Corps.”

Currently, nine U of I alumni volunteer for the Peace Corps in Cambodia, Guyana, Morocco, Namibia, Paraguay, Peru and Tanzania.
