United flight departing from SFO diverted to LAX after hydraulics issue with plane

(KRON) — A United Airlines flight that departed San Francisco Internation Airport was diverted to Los Angeles after an issue with the plane, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesperson told KRON4. The Mexico City-bound flight left SFO and landed safely at LAX Friday afternoon.

Flight 821 departed from SFO at 1:02 p.m. and landed at LAX at 4:51 p.m., according to United’s website. The plane had 105 passengers and five crew members on board.

United Airlines released a statement about the incident, saying the plane and its passengers landed safely.

On Friday evening, United flight 821 from San Francisco International Airport to Mexico City International Airport was diverted to Los Angeles International Airport due to an issue with the aircraft’s hydraulic system. The flight landed safely and passengers were deplaned normally at the gate. Customers will travel to MEX on a new aircraft scheduled to depart soon.

This marks the second United Airlines flight departing from SFO to be diverted in two days. Just last month, a United flight from SFO to Boston on Feb. 19 had a jet with wing damage as it was mid-air.

On Thursday, a Japan-bound flight out of SFO was diverted to LAX after a wheel fell off the plane upon departure. The wheel severely damaged a car parked in the employee parking lot of the airport.

United responded to KRON4’s question regarding safety concerns of its passengers, considering the three incidents in the last 21 days. The airline says it takes every event “seriously” and “safety is our top priority.”

We take every safety event seriously and will investigate each of the incidents that occurred this week to understand what happened and learn from them. Much of this work is conducted together with the manufacturers, the FAA, and the NTSB, as well as with the manufacturers of individual components. While this work is ongoing, each of these events is distinct and unrelated to one another. Safety is our top priority, and we’ll continue to do everything we can to keep our customers and employees safe.
