United CEO Says No One Will Be Fired Over Dragging Incident

United Airlines will not fire any employees over a widely publicized recent incident in which law enforcement dragged a passenger off a plane after he refused to give up his seat for a crew member.

This promise not to fire anyone includes CEO Oscar Munoz himself, who previously told reporters that he would not resign.

“It was a system failure,” said Munoz in response to a reporter's question Tuesday. “There was never a consideration for firing an employee or anyone around it.”

The controversy took place last week when the airline bumped four people for four crew members. One passenger refused to leave the plane, and law enforcement forcibly removed him, causing him to suffer a concussion, a broken nose, and several lost teeth, according to his lawyer.

A flurry of online petitions have called for Munoz’s resignation. The CEO struggled to respond to the incident, issuing a series of statements that many dismissed as insufficiently apologetic. He recently said the company takes “full responsibility.”
