Union says teacher will get chance to tell story
GOODRICH, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Education Association says a teacher in danger of being fired over video of a student who got stuck in a classroom chair looks forward to telling her story.
The video was recorded in November at Oaktree Elementary in Goodrich and recently released to a TV station. Patrick Greenfelder, a lawyer for the boy's family, says the teacher, Nicole McVey, and Principal Michael Ellis taunted the 10-year-old student, who has Asperger's syndrome.
Ellis resigned. McVey opted to fight the district's attempt to fire her through the tenure process.
In a statement Friday, MEA official Abby Zarimba says an upcoming hearing will let the teacher "provide context and truth about the situation."
Greenfelder says "the video speaks for itself" and "clearly shows a lack of compassion" for the boy.
