Union Pacific reaching out to 29th and Grove residents for further testing

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Union Pacific announced in a news release it is reaching out to property owners in the 29th and Grove area whose properties have been tabbed as needing extra testing.

The news release says the testing involves collecting indoor air samples, which can begin once owners provide a signed access agreement. The agreements are required for authorized technicians to check that indoor air meets the quality standards set by the Kansas Department of
Health and Environment.

The testing is paid for by Union Pacific and is part of the efforts to focus on in-depth testing and evaluation for long-term cleanup efforts.

Property owners can request an access agreement or find out if their property is on the list for this additional testing by calling 866-896-7511 or emailing 29grove@up.com.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says contamination in the area originated with a leak of chemicals at the Union Pacific rail yard approximately 30 years ago. A health study released in June 2023 showed higher rates of liver cancer and low birth weights on the site.
