Unemployment drops in most Wisconsin counties, cities in May

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Unemployment rates dropped in most Wisconsin cities and counties last month.

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development reported Wednesday that rates dropped in May for 27 out of 32 cities with at least 25,000 residents. All but two of the state's 72 counties had a drop between April and May. Milwaukee County was unchanged at 8.3 percent and Florence County went up from 7.4 percent to 8.4 percent.

Beloit had the highest unemployment rate at 11.7 percent followed by Racine at 11.6 percent.

Menominee County had the highest rate for any county at 13.8 percent.

Statewide unemployment in May was 7 percent compared with 7.6 percent nationwide.
