Work underway on roof, HVAC repairs at Pottsville Free Public Library

POTTSVILLE — Crews have begun work on the long-awaited heating, ventilation, air conditioning and roofing repairs at the Pottsville Free Public Library.

The project will replace the aging roof and air conditioning and heating system, both of which are over 25 years old, according to Jean Towle, executive director.

On Friday, Troy Mechanical Inc., Moosic, used a crane to lift the new HVAC units to the roof, and crews will continue setting up the equipment over the next few days.

Meanwhile, Hulton Contracting Inc., of Line Lexington, will begin the roofing repairs soon, which will be completed in about a week, Towle said.

About $117,000 of the $300,000 project is being funded by a Keystone Recreation, Park & Conservation grant, which the City of Pottsville had applied for on behalf of the library board of trustees.

The grant is administered by the state Department of Education’s Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

“I’m excited to have a new roof in,” Towle said, “and an air conditioning system that works.”

The rest of the project is being paid for by the library through fundraisers, private donations and bequests.

Towle said the library had experienced issues with both the HVAC system and roof over the past couple of years.

Some parts of the building, she said, saw faulty or malfunctioning air conditioning, while the roof had leaked and caused damage in several areas, including the staff bathroom, local history room and technical service rooms.

The library is at the corner of West Market and North Third streets.
