Under the Dome podcast: Legislative preview and the eCourts problem

Start your week in North Carolina politics with our latest Under the Dome podcast, for the week of April 22, 2024. Dawn Vaughan here, your podcast host and The News & Observer’s Capitol bureau chief. On this episode, I’m joined by my fellow state politics reporter Avi Bajpai and investigative reporter Tyler Dukes.

We’ve got what you need to know is coming for the General Assembly’s legislative short session that begins at noon on Wednesday.

We discuss potential bills addressing video lottery terminals and, of course, the state budget. Tied to the budget are the needs of the Judicial Branch and the troubled rollout of the eCourts system.

Dukes and I wrote about how the eCourts drama is tied to the Administrative Office of the Courts’ and Conference of District Attorneys’ budget requests and how they are at odds over what needs to be done, and when, to fix the problems. We talk about how that could play out this legislative session.

Headliner of the Week

Stay tuned until the end for our picks for Headliner of the Week. Our headliners range from a World War II airplane to VinFast stalling out to The Assembly’s story about an accident at House Rules Chair Destin Hall’s wedding.
