'Unbothered' moose takes stroll through Fredericton neighbourhood
Jennifer Grace held her breath as she watched a moose stroll past a woman in a wheelchair.
She and her daughter were on their way home from taking their puppy to the vet Tuesday morning. Driving down Sunset Drive in Fredericton, they spotted a moose walking down the street.
"I have never seen a moose in city limits before. It totally shocked us," Grace wrote to CBC News.
As nature lovers, Grace said she and her daughter were "freaking out and excited." They pulled into the parking lot of York Care Centre to watch the moose from a safe distance.
She said the moose seemed "completely unbothered," calmly walking past the woman in the wheelchair and some men working near York Care Centre.
"It was amazing and completely made our whole day."
The Department of Natural Resources confirmed it received a call on Tuesday regarding a moose sighting in the Sunset Drive area.
Staff went to the location but were unable to locate the animal, according to department spokesperson Nick Brown.
"A large, wooded area is located nearby, and staff are hopeful the moose returned to the forest," Brown wrote in a statement to CBC News.
"Young moose are commonly pushed away by their pregnant mothers in the spring as they prepare to give birth to another calf in the near future."
Jamie Ganong was walking along a trail near Sunset Drive and Burpee Street and came across a moose lying in the sun Tuesday afternoon. Ganong thinks it might even be the same one that was captured on video sauntering down Sunset earlier in the day.
