Unaffiliated candidate OK'd for fall election ballot

Apr. 5—GUILFORD COUNTY — The Guilford County Board of Elections has verified enough signatures to permit former school board member Bill Goebel to run this fall as an unaffiliated candidate to regain his seat.

Goebel needed at least 2,132 signatures from registered voters in the Guilford County Board of Education's District 3 to qualify for his name to be on the Nov. 5 general election ballot. County elections board staff have determined that Goebel has enough verified signatures, Elections Director Charlie Collicutt told The High Point Enterprise on Thursday.

The candidates in the District 3 school board race will be Goebel, incumbent Republican Michael Logan, who was appointed to the seat after Goebel was forced out by Republican-passed state legislation, and Democratic David Coates.

District 3 covers northern and northwestern parts of the county.

Goebel, who previously served as an appointed Republican member to fill an unexpired term, was appointed in early 2023 by the Democratic majority on the school board to fill a vacancy but was opposed by the Guilford County Republican Party, which backed Logan, and Republican legislators passed a bill requiring the school board to appoint Logan.
