UN condemns terror attack in Somalia in strongest terms at National Theater
The U.N. Security Council has condemned in "the strongest terms" a suicide bomber attack that killed 10 people and wounded dozens at a ceremony held in Somalia's recently reopened National Theater.
"The attack shows complete disregard for the lives of the Somali people and for their desire to return to normal daily life in Mogadishu," said U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice, who holds the rotating Security Council presidency this month. She was reading a press statement issued by the council.
The blast occurred as Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali stood at the podium to deliver a speech. He was unharmed, said government spokesman Abdirahman Omar Osman, but the president of Somalia's Olympic committee and the head of its soccer federation were among the dead.
