National energy operator Ukrenergo may once again introduce emergency power cuts for the population in the evening on May 15, provided that energy consumption surges, the company said in its statement.

Restrictions are expected to be introduced for household consumers in the period from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. EET.

Power outage schedules will be in effect from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. for industrial consumers on May 15, Ukrenergo added.

Power system experiences a significant electricity shortage throughout the day due to the cold weather, Ukrenergo explained. Ukraine has planned a record volume of electricity imports from the EU with a maximum capacity of up to 1,700 MW per hour.

Electricity shortage and emergency power outages in Ukraine

Controlled emergency power outages were introduced in all Ukraine’s oblasts due to a significant electricity shortage in the system on May 14, Ukrenergo reported.

They were applied from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m.

An emergency blackout schedule was also introduced in Kyiv this morning (May 15).

About 10% of consumers were disconnected, with restrictions in place until approximately 11:00 p.m.

Blackout schedules have been canceled in Kyiv and Oblast, as well as Odesa, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts, but the situation in the power system remains extremely difficult, DTEK said later.
