Ukrainian soldiers halt Russian advance in Kharkiv, counteroffensive starts — General Staff
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have stopped Russian troops in the Kharkiv sector and are conducting counteroffensive actions, said Colonel Ihor Prokhorenko, a representative of the General Staff, at a briefing at the Ukraine Media Center in Kyiv, according to a statement on Telegram on May 24.
He also noted that the situation is currently difficult, with Ukrainian soldiers continuing to defend themselves in the east and south, with the main actions taking place in Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts.
“As for the Kharkiv sector, the enemy is conducting offensive operations to create a buffer zone," said Prokhorenko.
"They are currently stopped, the situation is under control, and counter-offensive actions are underway."

The occupiers are also conducting offensive operations in the east of Kharkiv Oblast, planning to bypass the city of Kupyansk from the east, but they are not successful.
It is noted that fierce fighting continues along the entire front line. Armed Forces are inflicting heavy losses on the invaders, and Ukrainian artillery is actively working there, using drones and aviation.

Prokhorenko added that the situation in Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts is under control.
“The enemy is amassing troops on Russian territory, daily conducting air and artillery strikes on border settlements, and using UAVs," he said.
"They are trying to destroy critical infrastructure facilities, attacking with missiles and strike drones."
Russian offensive in Kharkiv Oblast
On May 10, Russian forces attempted to breach Ukraine's defenses near Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. Ukrainian forces successfully repelled the attacks.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian troops had launched a new counteroffensive in the area.
Monitoring groups noted that several villages in northern Kharkiv Oblast were occupied.
Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, described the situation in Kharkiv Oblast as "escalating". He stated that Russian troops had extended the active combat zone by 70 km.
Khortytsia Strategic and Operational Group of Troops spokesman said that Ukrainian Armed Forces had managed to stabilize the situation in Vovchansk on May 21.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), as of May 23, Ukraine had recaptured some territory in Vovchansk.
