Ukrainian President visits Madrid for bilateral talks and security deals

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Madrid to sign a security agreement and meet with government officials, the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported on May 27.

Zelenskyy's plane landed at Madrid-Barajas Airport, where he was personally greeted by King Felipe VI of Spain.

Following the arrival, the heads of state listened to their respective national anthems, starting with the Ukrainian anthem.

"I came to Spain to sign a bilateral security agreement and hold talks with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez," stated the President.

They discussed the continuation of defense cooperation, preparation of a new package of military aid, and training for Ukrainian soldiers.

"We have two summits coming up: the Peace Summit and the European Council," Zelenskyy said on X. "We will coordinate our efforts to ensure that both result in tangible outcomes."

Ukrainian President was hosted by King Felipe VI and met with leaders of the Spanish parliament’s chambers and factions.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy originally planned to visit Spain on May 17 but canceled all foreign trips on May 15 as Russia ramped up its military activities in northern Kharkiv Oblast.
