Ukrainian missile hits secret Russian air defense in Crimea

A Russian air defense base on Mount Ai-Petri in temporarily occupied Crimea was damaged during a missile attack, resulting in the deaths of the unit commander and a soldier, Russian Telegram channel Astra reported on May 13.

The exact number of Russian casualties is still being determined.

The mountain hosts an air defense base belonging to the 3rd Radio Technical Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces, a unit within the Russian Aerial Radio Technical Troops, according to Astra. This military formation was established in 2014 following Russia's occupation of Crimea, based on the 40th Radio Technical Brigade of the Air Force of Ukraine, with its headquarters in Sevastopol.

The radio technical center on Mount Ai-Petri, which provides long-range reconnaissance and guidance for air defense troops, was originally established during Soviet times. The mountain also houses military camps for personnel maintaining these facilities.

Russian propaganda media reported a missile attack on the temporarily occupied peninsula on May 13. They claimed that on that morning, the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck Crimea and Sevastopol. Russian air defense reportedly shot down two missiles over the sea and engaged targets in the north of the peninsula.
