“I’d say, probably, you know, weeks, not months, before they’re able to really nail down the details of this and start to – start to put it in place, the training regimen,” Kirby said.

He said the Pentagon assesses that they don’t have any excess Abrams in their inventory, and that all of them are gainfully employed for the country’s own national security defense.

“And even if there were excess tanks, the process of getting them to Ukraine to prepare them for use by the Ukrainians, to train the Ukrainians, put all the parts and supplies in place, it would take many months anyway,” the spokesman said.

On Jan. 25, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz officially announced that Germany would transfer 14 Leopard-2 tanks to Ukraine and approve their re-export from partner countries. According to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, the tanks could be sent to Ukraine in about three months.

The same day, U.S. President Joe Biden announced plans to supply 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, along with the equipment and spare parts needed to keep them running. Biden added that while the delivery of Abrams will take some time, the training of the Ukrainian crews will begin as soon as possible.
