The Ukrainian General Staff reported on Facebook that Russian military operations on the Kupyansk front have nearly doubled as of May 26, with combat engagements escalating to 83 from earlier counts.

On this front, Russian forces attempted to advance near Novoyehorivka, Petropavlivka, Berestove, and Hrekivka, and conducted air strikes near Bohuslavka and Shyikivka. In total, 21 combat engagements were recorded near Kupyansk on that day.

Russian offensive in Kharkiv Oblast

Further north in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukrainian defense lines held against a series of Russian assaults near Vovchansk on May 10. Despite these challenges, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Russian troops have launched a counteroffensive in the region.

Local monitoring groups have observed the occupation of several villages in northern Kharkiv Oblast, signaling an escalation in the conflict. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, noted that the active combat zone had expanded by 70 kilometers.

However, Ukrainian forces managed to stabilize the situation in Vovchansk by May 21, according to a spokesperson from the Khortytsia Strategic and Operational Troop Grouping. The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War reported that by May 23, Ukrainian forces had regained some territory in Vovchansk.

As of May 24, the General Staff declared that Ukrainian troops had halted Russian advances in the Kharkiv sector and were actively counterattacking. President Zelenskyy stated, "The Ukrainian Armed Forces have taken combat control of the border of Kharkiv Oblast," and noted that the losses during this Russian offensive equated to eight enemy soldiers for every Ukrainian casualty.
