Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) effectively thwart Russian attempts to breach Ukraine's defenses and advance further west of Bahmut in Donetsk Oblast, said Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov on Facebook on April 14, while visiting the Donetsk front.

"The situation is tense," Umerov said.

"The enemy is trying to advance deeper into the AFU positions, focusing on breaking through west of Bahmut."

Situation on the Donetsk front

Russians are resorting to tactics that helped them capture Avdiivka in an attempt to advance towards Chasiv Yar – a city west of Bakhmut.

Ukrainian defenders' positions are heavily targeted with artillery and fire from Russian aircraft and helicopters, the Institute for the Study of War reported on April 10.

The situation on the Eastern front has significantly worsened in recent days, Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on April 13.

The monitoring portal DeepState reported that Russians had occupied the village of Bohdanivka and advanced near Chasiv Yar. However, the Defense Ministry refuted reports of Bohdanivka's occupation.

Russia's top military leadership has tasked its soldiers with capturing Chasiv Yar by May 9.

Russia is concentrating efforts to breach the defense and advance towards the Siversky Donets – Donbas canal to create conditions for further progress towards Kramatorsk, Syrskyi announced on April 14.
