Ukraine's Armed Forces thwart Russian breakthrough attempt in Kharkiv Oblast

Russian forces attempted to breach the Strilecha-Hlyboke sector in Kharkiv Oblast on May 26, but were successfully repelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Nazar Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Khortytsia troop grouping, reported on national television.

"In Kharkiv Oblast, the Defense Forces stopped the enemy in the area of Strilecha-Hlyboke," said Voloshyn.

“Systematic work is underway to drive the enemy out of their positions. The defense forces reached the defensive lines in time for the most part.”

The Russian military had some success near Vovchansk, as well in the area of Strilecha-Hlyboke, the Khortytsia spokesman added.

"The occupiers are trying to saturate these areas with equipment and manpower to prevent the Defense Forces from seizing the tactical initiative on the battlefield," he said.

“Of course, the enemy keeps trying to break through the Ukrainian defense near Lyptsi, Vovchansk, Tykhe, and Starytsia.”

The aggressor continues to put pressure on Vovchansk and Lyptsi.

"But thanks to the actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the enemy troops are stuck on the road in Lyptsi, they are completely bogged down in Vovchansk; the Ukrainian Armed Forces are pushing them out of there," he stated.

The Khortytsia grouping spokesman also noted that the Russian forces are trying to storm Vovchansk with infantry units.

Russian offensive in Kharkiv Oblast

Russian forces attempted to breach Ukraine's defenses near Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast on May 10, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. Ukrainian forces successfully repelled the attacks.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian troops had launched a new counteroffensive in the area.

Monitoring groups noted that several villages in northern Kharkiv Oblast were occupied.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, described the situation in Kharkiv Oblast as "escalating." He stated that Russian troops had extended the active combat zone by 70 km.

A spokesman for the Khortytsia Strategic and Operational Troop Grouping said the Ukrainian Armed Forces had stabilized the situation in Vovchansk on May 21.

Ukraine had recaptured some territory in Vovchansk, according to the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), as of May 23.

As of May 24, the General Staff stated that Ukrainian forces had stopped Russian troops in the Kharkiv sector and were conducting counteroffensives.

"The Ukrainian Armed Forces had taken combat control of the border of Kharkiv Oblast," stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Losses during the Russian offensive there reportedly amounted to eight enemy soldiers for every one Ukrainian.
