Photos: Long lines and empty shelves seen at supermarkets in Ukraine

As Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine enters its second week, long lines and empty shelves have been seen at supermarkets in major cities across the war-torn country — prompting fears that the escalating attacks, which have already disrupted supply chains, will lead to food shortages.

Volunteer groups have stepped in to help with donations of food and other critical supplies, distributing boxes at hospitals and train stations.

Chef José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen, arrived in Lviv on Wednesday to help prepare meals for those fleeing Ukraine or sheltering in place.

According to the United Nations, more than 1 million people have left Ukraine in the week since Russia’s invasion began.
