Ukraine strengthens border defenses with 15,000 new personnel

Verkhovna Rada approved a bill to increase number of State Border Guard Service (SBGS) of Ukraine by 15.000 servicemen to control the border more effectively, MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak from Voice faction reported on Telegram on April 24.

327 MPs supported this bill.

This expansion will bring the total strength of the SBGS to up to 75,000 personnel, including up to 67,000 military staff, following the end of martial law on Ukrainian territory.

The bill was introduced by the Cabinet of Ministers on March 18. Taras Melnyuk, the Cabinet’s representative in the Verkhovna Rada, explained that the additional personnel are necessary to ensure that border guards can effectively manage the border in the postwar period and respond appropriately to national security threats.
