Ukraine and Hungary's foreign ministers seek common ground

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba met with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó, in Brussels on April 3, signaling a potential thaw in the previously frosty relations between the two countries.
Kuleba shared details of the meeting on the social media platform X, highlighting the constructive dialogue that took place.
"Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó and I had a lengthy meeting in Brussels today," Kuleba said.

The ministers agreed that in recent weeks, a number of steps were taken to overcome issues in the bilateral relations between Ukraine and Hungary.
"In the spirit of this positive trend, we anticipate more constructive developments in the coming days and weeks," Kuleba said.
Hungary has been blocking Kyiv’s cooperation with NATO for years, claiming a "policy of violating the rights of national minorities."
A key element of their discussions likely involved Ukraine's legislation on national minorities, a crucial factor for initiating negotiations on Ukraine's EU membership. Although the Ukrainian parliament passed a comprehensive bill on this matter in December 2022, the EU's Venice Commission recommended amendments to certain sections, particularly those concerning minority language rights, indicating that the dialogue between Ukraine and Hungary remains vital for resolving these complex issues.
