Ukraine may implement power outages from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on April 18, Ukrenergo reported on April 17.

The power outage schedule will be applied equally to businesses and industrial enterprises across all Ukrainian oblasts, if necessary.

The volume of restrictions would be minimal, and they would not apply to critical infrastructure facilities or defense enterprises.

The company stated that power restrictions are necessary due to Russia's mass missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian power stations.

Electricity consumption in Ukraine has increased due to cooling weather, and the system is facing a shortage of capacity.

Ukrenergo called on all consumers to use electricity sparingly.

Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure

Russia began attacking Ukraine's largest and most powerful energy facilities in the spring of 2024.

The energy system suffered serious losses:

  • Both power stations of DniproHES in Zaporizhzhya were lost. While the dam survived, the equipment was destroyed, and it may take years for its restoration.

  • Kharkiv's TPS-5 was destroyed. Restoring it would be akin to building a new one, a task that will also take several years.

  • The Zmiivska TPS (part of Centrenergo) in Kharkiv Oblast was destroyed.

  • The DTEK Group (owned by Rinat Akhmetov) reported an 80% loss in generation.

  • All power units of the Burshtyn and Ladyzhyn thermal power stations were damaged.

  • A gas storage facility in Western Ukraine was also damaged.

In light of Russia's renewed mass strikes on Ukraine's energy system, preparations for any scenarios in the spring and summer are necessary, Ukraine's Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said on April 12.
