Ukraine bolsters air defense with another German IRIS-T SLM system
Germany delivered another IRIS-T SLM air defense system to Ukraine on May 24, strengthening Kyiv's capabilities of intercepting Russian cruise missiles, Der Spiegel reported.
Ukraine now has a total of four medium-range IRIS-T systems and one short-range IRIS-T SLS system. Berlin has pledged to provide Kyiv with a total of nine IRIS-T SLMs with a range of up to 40 kilometers and eleven IRIS-T SLSs with a range of up to 12 kilometers.
However, despite the arrival of these systems, Ukraine still faces a shortage of both air defense systems and ammunition due to increased Russian airstrikes. The manufacturer is now working to meet Ukraine's demand for air defense missiles.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously stated that Kyiv was in negotiations with Berlin to obtain an additional IRIS-T air defense system.
On April 18, Helmut Rauch, head of the German arms manufacturer Diehl Defence, said that Ukraine would receive a new air defense system "in the next few weeks".
