UK police: Phone hacking probe goes beyond media

British police: Phone hacking probe extends beyond media organizations

LONDON (AP) -- London's police force is explicitly confirming that it is investigating companies and individuals beyond the media industry as part of Britain's wide-ranging phone hacking probe.

Police have occasionally noted that some of the more than 125 people detained as part of their investigations into eavesdropping, hacking, and police bribery have nothing to do with the media world.

But Tuesday's statement makes it clear that Scotland Yard has its eye on targets beyond the cut-throat tabloids that thrust the practices into the public eye.

Nonetheless, police are resisting pressure to reveal names of who else is under investigation, saying in their statement it "will not risk prejudicing future potential prosecutions" by releasing such details.
