Numerous incidents of munitions being released from Russian aircraft on its own territory are pointing to a systemic problem that poses a great threat to the Russian civilian population.

Details: UK intelligence mentioned a series of cases of munitions falling off Russian aircraft that were supposed to launch them at targets in Ukraine. For instance, on 4 May 2024, it was reported that a fighter jet released a FAB-500 over the Russian city of Belgorod. The governor of Belgorod Oblast spoke about the explosion and the damage it caused – 30 damaged houses, 10 cars and five people were injured  – without giving a reason.

On 18 February, there was information about a FAB-250 that was released near Belgorod, which led to the evacuation of 150 people.

UK intelligence cited media estimates, without naming specific outlets, that in March-April 2024 alone, 20 munitions were released in this way over Russia’s Belgorod Oblast.

Quote: "These instances indicate Russia’s continued inability to successfully employ their munitions on intended targets. Such errors have destructive and lethal consequences for the Russian population."
