Luke Skywalker (aka Mark Hamill) was one of the most anticipated (and also most secretive) cameos in the latest installment of the Star Wars franchise. In fact, a huge portion of the movie was dedicated to answering the basic question of “Where did Luke Skywalker go?” A fan-favorite since the creation of the entire Star Wars universe, it’s no wonder there was a tangible giddiness when Rey finally finds the powerful Jedi at the very end of the movie.

And people everywhere immediately became stoked about the prospect of Rey and Luke becoming BFFs as Luke teaches her all the ways to hone and channel her newfound powers over the Force. And while nobody knows exactly what will go down in the next movie, Episode VIII, Hamill may have just let us in on a major spoiler (that we totally don’t want to believe for a lot of reasons).

During an exclusive live chat with The Big Issue in London, Hamill made a off-handed comment about the upcoming Star Wars installments that had some major implications. He said, “I finish Episode VIII, and then I’m out of work.” Which could maybe mean that (*gasp*) Luke Skywalker could possibly die in this next movie. We already know that these modern Star Wars won’t shy away from killing major classic characters (we love you forever, Han Solo), but it seems crazy to kill off the main character of the entire series.

Then again, Rey is really the new star of the franchise and the one whose storyline we’ll obviously be following closely from here on out. And given that Luke may become an Obi-Wan Kenobe-like character to her, it’s entire possibly he’ll meet the same fate as his mentor. But, we also know that the Force is powerful and makes it so people who have passed on can still show up in ghost-like cameos whenever they want, so maybe there’s a little silver lining if it does happen.

This is, of course, a worst case scenario interpretation of that comment. Hamill could have also just been making the observation that he’s not yet signed on to do any more movies, even if his character stays alive at the end of the next film. At this point, we can only hope for the best and wait with anxious anticipation to see the OG Jedi back in action on the big screen.
