UFCW Local 135 to leave Mission Valley for Scripps Ranch location

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A labor union is moving its headquarters from Mission Valley to the Scripps Ranch area after purchasing a new building.

In a release Thursday, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 135 announced the new building, acquired for $4.5 million, will be located at 10075 Carroll Canyon Road. However, UFCW Local 135 said the transition could take between nine months to a year.

According to the release, the decision to move is due, in part, to challenges at the union’s current location on Camino del Rio South, including a leaking roof, outdating plumbing, limited parking and not enough space.

The release also cited the city’s approval of a new Home Depot store next door at 1895 Camino del Rio South as one of its deciding factors. A report to the planning commission issued in 2021 said the store would include a building measuring about 106,688 square feet, as well as a nearly 18,000 sq. ft. garden center and a 155,000 sq. ft. garage structure. The property was the former site of the Bowlero/Scottish Rite Center built during the 1950s-60s.

UFCW Local 135 said the new building in Scripps Ranch, which was previously owned by the Cabrillo Federal Credit Union, is a two-story structure located just off Interstate 15, occupying about 17,000 sq. ft. The union said it also offers 65 parking spaces.

As for the current building, the union said it may consider selling or leasing the property, but firm plans have not yet been decided.
