UDOT issues warning for hazardous winds along I-15 corridor

FARMINGTON, Utah (ABC4) — Drive carefully along the I-15 corridor on Thursday, March 14, as strong winds and powerful gusts are expected to make for hazardous conditions north of Salt Lake City.

The Utah Department of Transportation issued an emergency alert Thursday morning, warning drivers of downslope winds and gusts exceeding 60 miles per hour. Winds at those speeds are capable of overturning high-profile vehicles including cars, trucks or SUVs that sit higher off the ground.

The warning extends along I-15 from Davis County to Tremonton as well as US-89, Legacy Parkway, the West Davis Highway, US-6, US-91 and I-84.

“The main concern will be between Brigham City and Centerville,” warned UDOT officials. “Starting Thursday after 9 a.m., strong crosswinds from the east will be a concern with gusts over 65 mph expected. Winds will wax [and] wane at times, increasing again Thursday night [into] Friday morning, before lessening rapidly midday Friday.”

UDOT said high-profile vehicles and those pulling trailers may be restricted by law enforcement from Utah Highway Patrol interstate travel due to safety concerns.

The National Weather Service said would start ramping up Thursday morning with possible hurricane-force gusts expected between Kaysville and Bountiful in Davis County. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor objects that could blow away and be prepared for any possible road closures and power outages.
