U.S. skier Ted Ligety says he's probably done in PyeongChang after disappointing slalom

Ted Ligety’s Olympic career appears to be over.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time world champion in alpine skiing events had a disappointing 15th-place finish in Sunday’s giant slalom, an event where he took gold in Sochi four years ago.

He told reporters after the race that he’s likely out for the slalom competition later this week.

“This is probably it for me (at) these Games,” Ligety said at the Yongpyong Alpine Center. “I was thinking about doing the slalom but we tried to figure out where I’d start, and it would be in the 70s or 80s, which is really far out to have a chance to have a good run at it.”

Ligety finished fitth in the alpine combined and did not finish the Super-G in PyeongChang.

In addition to his slalom gold in Sochi, Ligety won gold in the combined in 2006 at Turin.

While done at the Olympics, he’s not done with his racing season.

“I’ll probably just head back to Europe now and get ready for the rest of the World Cups,” Ligety said.

At 33 years old, with a young son and having fought through injuries, a run at the 2022 Games in Beijing seems unlikely.
