U.S. officials warn of Russian interference in the 2016 election
On October 7, 2016, the U.S. intelligence community issues an unprecedented statement warning that Russia is interfering with the presidential election. "We felt very strongly that, knowing what we knew, that it was imperative to share that publicly and with the electorate," former DNI director James Clapper tells Yahoo News. "If the election did go south, for one reason or another, and then afterwards it was learned that we knew about what the Russians were doing and sat silent, there'd be hell to pay."
