U.S. News: York ranked 78 out of 150 for best places to live

U.S. News analyzed the 150 most populous metro areas to find the best places to live - and York has been ranked No. 78.

According U.S. News, to be considered for the list, the location had to have good value, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market and a high quality of life. York made the list among other Pennsylvania cities in this order: Harrisburg (38), Pittsburgh (47), Lancaster (55), York (78), Scranton (85), Reading (88), Allentown (109), Philadelphia (119).

York scored an overall total of 6.8 out of 10 for value, and 6.7 for quality of life, giving the White Rose City an overall score of 6.3.

"Newcomers to York will find remnants of its rich history and industrial heritage coloring the urban landscape, from restored Colonial-era buildings to unexpected touches of playful public sculpture made from bits of old York machinery," the report read.

"York's shops, high-end apartments and special events – along with a flourishing arts community – have led to downtown living verging on trendy and a growing number of visitors to the WeCo, Market and Royal Square districts that make up York's major activity centers," the report read.

Also analyzed by U.S. News were the best places to retire, and out of 150, York is No. 5, just behind Tampa, Florida.
