The U.S. News & World Report rankings for high schools were released Tuesday, and Evansville's Signature School again landed a prominent spot nationally.

The public charter on Evansville's Main Street earned the top spot nationally for charter schools, the No. 2 spot nationally among all public high schools, and the top ranking in Indiana among public high schools.

Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation and how well they prepare students for college, according to the U.S. News & World Report website. The U.S. News & World Report feature listed profiles for private schools, but did not issue rankings for them.

Jean Hitchcock, executive director/principal at Signature School, said the recognition is the result of contributions by the open admission institution's entire family. Signature has nearly 380 students and about 30 faculty members.

"These (rankings) are real validation of the real passion and dedication of the teachers, the students, our families – really, all the stakeholders, the board members," Hitchcock said Tuesday. "It’s nice to have that outside validation of a job well done."
