FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The U.S. Marshals Museum in Fort Smith has a new exhibit all about the history of slavery within the Cherokee Nation.

The exhibit features the stories and documents of what’s called the “Cherokee Freedmen” which is the name for descendants of black slaves who were owned by the Cherokee Nation.

KNWA/FOX24 talked with Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Junior about the importance of sharing and remembering this part of his tribe’s history.

“I think for the Cherokee Nation, we need to examine not only the triumphant parts of our history and there are a lot of them. We need to explore the dark chapters, the consequences of our actions and how we can achieve reconciliation,” Hoskin said.

The exhibit is open seven days a week from nine to five. Admission to the museum is $15 for adults and $8 for kids between six and 17.
